The Community School Initiative @ Roosevelt SHS utilizes the Community School Model, which was designed to offer students and families supports that extend beyond the classroom to meet non-educational needs such as social services, parent engagement and mental health care. The objectives of a community school are to improve academic achievement; reduce absenteeism; build stronger relationships between students, parents, and communities; and improve the skills, capacity and well-being of the surrounding community residents. GAFSC provides the following services:
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training – MHFA is an empirically-backed public education and prevention tool that will benefit parents, school staff and community members during the year. Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, the eight-hour MHFA curriculum teaches how to help a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis is resolved.
Question Persuade and Refer (QPR) Teen Suicide Prevention – This two-hour training teaches anyone to recognize the crisis and warning signs that a teen may be contemplating suicide and the tools to refer the young person for professional help.
Case Management Services to Address Truancy – For students identified as being at risk of having a court referral for truancy, family-based outreach and case management will be provided
