Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of emotional well-being in our everyday lives. At Georgia Avenue Family Support Collaborative (GAFSC), we recognize that supporting mental health is essential to building strong families, thriving neighborhoods, and healthy communities.

Our mission has always been rooted in helping families grow stronger, fostering safe environments for children and youth, and empowering community support. We understand that mental health is not separate from these goals — it is central to them.

When individuals feel emotionally supported, they are better able to care for themselves and their families, engage in their neighborhoods, and reach their full potential.

This month, we will focus on creating spaces where conversations about mental health are met with compassion and where all members can access the resources they need to navigate life’s challenges. Whether through case management, family support services, community and youth engagement, or partnerships with local organizations, GAFSC remains dedicated to promoting wellness in all its forms.

We encourage everyone to take time this month to prioritize self-care, reach out for support when needed, and remind others that it is okay to ask for help. Together, we can build safe spaces where mental health is valued, supported, and protected.

If you or someone you know is in need of resources or assistance, please contact us, because GAFSC is here to help. You can reach us via phone at (202) 722-1815 or by email at info@gafsc-dc.org.

Additional resources are available through the DC Department of Behavioral Health by talking with a mental health counselor at their 24/7 Access Helpline 1-888-7WE-HELP to help select additional providers.

Together, we strengthen one another, our families, and our communities. Together, we support mental wellness.
