The Parent Café, hosted by the Georgia Ave Family Support Collaborative Family Services, continues to thrive. The Cafe fosters meaningful conversations and strengthens community connections among families. Over the past month, attendance has steadily increased, with an average of 21-30 participants per session, including many long-term participants who have been involved for 5-8 years. The participants come from all wards across the city, with many from Ward 4. Participation represents the various GAFSC programs, especially Family Services Families (FS) and some families from the Family Re-Housing Stabilization Program (FRSP). The parents’ feedback consistently highlights the safe, judgment-free space to share experiences and challenges. Recent sessions have focused on emotional resilience, practical support during challenging times, and the crucial balance between self-care and parenting, support in times of need, and balancing self-care with parenting responsibilities. The themes are tied to the five protective factors of social and Emotional competence, Knowledge of Parenting &Child development, Social Connections, Resilience, and Concrete Support.
Mr. Hampton, a staff member from the Show Up Stand Up (SUSO) Cafe facilitator, has noted stronger peer support dynamics forming, and several parents have expressed the importance of the cafes and the nature of the dialogue, which offers them the space to share experiences and learn from each other. The participants have described the Cafe as a welcoming community that offers a supportive environment for them to connect and learn from each other. They expressed a sense of community.
Plans are underway to expand outreach through local schools and community centers to engage a broader demographic. Overall, the Parent Café is gaining momentum as a trusted resource for family support and empowerment. The Cafe has formed successful partnerships with community partners, such as the Help Me Grow Program and DC Health.
