Every August, National Truancy Prevention Month calls attention to a critical issue that affects the future of our children and youth school attendance.. Truancy is more than just a number—it’s a reflection of whether students feel safe, supported, and engaged in their learning environments. At Georgia Avenue Family Support Collaborative (GAFSC), we believe that consistent student attendance allows them to thrive.
That’s why we’re proud to be a part of Show Up, Stand Out (SUSO), a citywide initiative led by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). Through SUSO, GAFSC works directly with families to address the root causes of absenteeism—from housing instability and mental health challenges to transportation barriers and school engagement.
Our approach is grounded in compassion, not punishment. We know that every absence has a story, and our goal is to help families overcome challenges before they turn into crises. GAFSC’s Family Support Workers (FSWs) assist parents, caregivers, and school staff in building trust, providing resources, and creating solutions that help students stay connected and on track.
Truancy prevention isn’t just about getting students in the door; it’s about making sure they have every opportunity to succeed once they’re there. We work diligently to foster a school culture where every child feels seen, valued, and capable.
As we recommit to our mission this month, we’re also working to meet an immediate need in our community. This back-to-school season, GAFSC is raising $7,500 to support 25 Ward 4 families through our Back-to-School Whole Family Enrichment Event. With your help, families facing financial hardship will receive essential school supplies, nourishing meals, and activities that foster connection and healing.
Your donation will have a direct impact on children and parents in Ward 4 by helping them start the school year with confidence and care. You can donate directly on our website, or by clicking here!
Together, we can ensure that every student has what they need to show up, stand out, and succeed.
If your family or someone you know could benefit from SUSO and/or Family Services support, or if you’d like to get involved with our back-to-school efforts, please don’t hesitate to reach out. GAFSC is here to help.
